No sooner could you say Mike & Sally are on holiday than the SHVR
summer rally had been and gone !
Thursday morning saw Ron Saab, Bill Rover and Mike Aston, whizzing to
Fishguard to meet the kinsale invaders. Some sixteen cars and 46 people
joined the convoy back to the towers.
Thursday night was Gwachel night in Pontardawe, All the ingredients for
what was a great night thanks to Ed & Sarah. It was a good night with
plenty of entertainment and food arranged but an early night compared to
last year.
On Friday, a visit to the Swansea City Football stadium had been arranged
by Geoff Thomas and Mike Jones. Your masters of ceremonies were
Neil, Jeff & Kevin. A great indoor visit particularly as the weather was
lousy, everyone enjoyed the tour and some Euros exchanged hands for
sporting accessories.
Saturday was the rally start proper at Day's Plasmarl, a fantastic turnout
with a wide variety of cars It was a bit special this year as it coincided with
the launch of the new Ford Fiesta and included some visitors from the Ford
Motor Company to witness the launch proceedings.
So it was all go for the Plasmarl team. Dennis (the headless chicken) had
arranged for a few old Fiesta's to park next to the new ones. Jeff Robbins
& Greg Pye had brought along a trio of Ford Model T's to add to the Ford
line up. Whilst other members & supporters had filled the front of the
showroom with yet more Fords, including a lotus Cortina & other Mk1 &
Mk 2 models.
The girl’s team did a splendid job of dishing out the entry packs & selling
raffle tickets for yet another mega raffle, A huge thank you to the
individuals & companies that donated prizes.
Bacon rolls & coffee all round courtesy of Days, then the raffle began with
Kevin and Mike doing their usual double act team effort of totally
confusing themselves & the ticket holders. Great effort, lots of fun.
Then it was take up positions for the off. A mass exit for a great run to
Pantglas Hall. Needless to say some people followed the sat nav instead of
5
the correct instructions, and yes! The sat nav took them up lanes that even
our postman on his bike wouldn't go. And then! When they discovered it
was a dead end the twisted neck & mirrors came into use along with a little
swear word or two.
On arrival at Pantglas Hall there was a buffet for those who wished.
Then it was off to a very nice surprise visit to Chris & Johnny Thomas'
home to view a splendid collection of very early motorcycles and veteran
cars. Then back to the towers for evening meal.
Sunday morning saw us at our new venue Sinclair/Seat Gorseinon for day
two of our events. Although we did have some deserters that nipped next
door to Homestores! Where they were made most welcome as always.
Then it was flag at the ready for the off to the Gwili Railway via another
superb route put together by Mike & Sally. All had been arranged with
plenty of parking reserved for the rally entrants along with discount on the
train. After taking a short cut to arrive first to make sure all was going to
plan ! What plan! Oh that plan? On arrival parking space was at a
premium & confusion reigned. I questioned the man in charge as to why
there was not enough parking space, We weren't expecting you this week
he uttered. It’s in your book I said, I suggest you have a look.. OH!! s... &
various other panic stricken phrases were blurted out. Yes all the details
are here, No one’s looked at them today.. So we were hurried on to a late
train & apologies were plentiful along with instructions not to pay.. Still a
good day & it all adds to the confusion..
Whistle &cap returned, then off to the golf club for buffet and
presentations. Great turn out, plenty of food & then the presentations &
funnies, hosted by Cathal, Neil & Mike. The usual fun poking, all done in
the best possible taste! Then on to another marathon raffle.
The recipients of this year’s fund raising is Bikeability Swansea. Details of
funds raised and donations to follow. Another hugely successful event put
together by your club. A big thank you to all those who assisted over the
rally weekend, the Marshalls, the route planners ,the venue & food
arrangers, the bag &envelope fillers, the magazine editors and contributors,
Our sound man, the raffle ticket sellers & the companies and individuals
that donated items.
